MGT 311 Information Management (3 Credits)

As the complexity of business processes has grown during this century the technology of managing money and information has become more complex and specialized. In recent decades increasingly in the computing profession, Information technology tends to dominate information management. This course will cover these tendencies and relate the implications to Managers. This course aims to brief managers on the most important basic principles of information management in the digital age, and give an account of why the strategic planning of information management cannot simply be left to computing technical specialists. Students will, through a series of exercises, be taught the basic principles of relational database design and generalized markup languages, and then be presented with an account of applications in a range of industries. The unit will also present an overview of the World Wide Web and the various technologies proposed to improve its rather mixed performance as an information management tool. Other areas covered will include data warehousing and data mining, issues in internationalization, quality management and the role of standards.
